Ensembles

Orchestra

JCMS Orchestra is the hub of music in Jesus College and provides many opportunities for the numerous talented musicians in college to perform some of the best music that exists in the classical repertoire together. We meet for rehearsals once a week and hold popular termly concerts in our beautiful chapel. Recent performances have featured much familiar repertoire from Mozart, Brahms and John Williams, but we also try to explore the works of lesser-known composers, as well as premiering new compositions – sometimes from our very own Jesuans! Each year, we present a concerto performed and conducted by Jesuans. The opportunity to conduct the ensemble in concert is open to any Jesus College students: no prior experience is necessary, and some training is available to new conductors. If you’re interested in joining, please email our President (email)

Jesus College Big Band

Jesus College Big Band (JCBB) was founded in 2011, open to members of the college (and some people from further afield!) who play any sort of jazz instrument. The band doesn’t just play the swing standards; we also venture into the realms of funk, soul, and sometimes more contemporary pop covers. After building up through student ents gigs throughout the year, we’ve finished with popular performances at May Balls. If you are interesting in restarting this band, please contact our representative (email)

Recital Series

JCMS holds one of the most prestigious recital series, with a range of performances coming from both Jesuans and further afield. These recitals take place in our chapel weekly on Saturday at 8pm during Michaelmas and Lent term, and we hold a week-long lunchtime recital series during May Week. If you are interested in performing, please contact our recitals managers.

Jesus Singers

The Jesus Singers is a non-audition vocal group that provides opportunities for students to perform fun repertoire from a range of genres, catering to all voice parts. Past concerts have included performances of ‘White Winter Hymnal’, ‘Some Nights, ‘Circle of Life’, and an Evolution of Musical Theatre. We perform concerts all year round, including a festive concert in Michaelmas term, and ‘Sing!!!’ at Magdalene College in Lent term, in which a range of Cambridge University’s non-audition choirs participate and collaborate.

Rehearsals are held once a week and are led by our Musical Director. Anyone wishing to join Jesus Singers should contact one of our President. We welcome people of all singing backgrounds and look forward to having you sing with us.

Chapel Sessions

The Jesus Chapel Sessions Series are a relaxed space for Jesuans to perform alternative musical genres. The popular termly ‘Blues and Chill’ sessions feature some of our most talented acoustic and jazz musicians, and late in Michaelmas term the annual performance of the Snowman is popular with students and staff alike. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Chapel Sessions manager (email) if you’d like to perform at one of our chapel sessions.
